According to the Global Competitiveness Report 2014–2015, Switzerland has the most competitive national economy in the world. This is due to some very good prevailing circumstances. Despite its competitiveness, the Swiss economy still faces significant challenges. These include the strong Swiss franc, which has been accentuated by the lifting of the minimum exchange rate, and constant structural change in the economy.
The Federal Council took account of these economic challenges in its message of 18th February 2015 about location promotion from 2016 to 2019. For example, Regional Innovation Systems (RIS) are being promoted as part of the Confederation’s new regional policy. With the new, multiannual programme, activities concerning regional innovation support are bundled into functional and national economic areas and strategically aligned. This will enable performance of the regional innovation systems to be improved.
