Network event "Spotlight on Administration" with Dufry
The Economic Development Unit staged the second internal administrative network event on 4th February 2016. Employees from different departments of the cantonal administration took part in the event. Basel travel retailer Dufry was the focal point of this year’s meeting.
At the beginning of the event, Jonas Stoll from BAK Basel Economics AG reported on the prospects of the Swiss retail trade, which is currently under increased pressure from competition and pricing.
This was then followed by an insight from Andreas Schneiter, CFO of Dufry, into the development and activity of the company, who spoke about his experience with the authorities in Basel.
Dufry, which has been based in Basel for over 150 years and whose history dates back to the name of Weitnauer, is the global leader of the travel retail trade. The company employs around 29,000 people and can look back on successful, continuous growth over the past few years. By acquiring travel retailers Nuance and World Duty Free (WDF), Dufry continued to substantially strengthen its position in the market in the last two years and today is the global leader with a 24% share of the market.
Andreas Schneiter also reported on the current challenges the company is now facing, caused in particular by the steady growth in business. On the one hand there is the consolidation of a uniform corporate culture along with a new corporate identity in the foreground, while on the other hand Dufry is focusing on the integration of three companies at the main headquarters in Switzerland and the employees who work there. As the new company was being formed and Basel was confirmed as its global headquarters, the new company logo was also created.
As with all companies, sound economic conditions are of crucial importance for Dufry. This also entails successful cooperation with the authorities. Maintaining regular communication with the relevant administrative bodies in Basel is very important for Dufry. This includes the exchange of information on the topic of work permits in particular because Dufry has a predominantly international workforce. Legal certainty on tax matters is also an important issue, where efficient, timely and stable solutions and framework conditions are essential.
There were interesting talks during the reception that followed, where valuable contacts were made and further strengthened. The event was held at Technologiepark Basel.
Dufry is the largest global travel retailer and employs close to 29,000 people. The company was founded as a retail shop in 1865, under the name of Weitnauer and, in 2015, it celebrated its 150th anniversary. It operates over 2,200 shops in 63 countries, which are mainly located in airports such as Basel-Mulhouse, Zurich and Geneva, on cruise liners and in ports, as well as in places of interest for tourists. The group’s head office is located in Basel with over 150 employees. Dufry is listed on the Swiss Stock Exchange and in Brazil. For more information about Dufry please visit www.dufry.ch.
