1. Basel-Shanghai Business Forum

The programme was officially opened with a welcome message from the Councillor Christoph Brutschin. The city of Shanghai was represented by Douglas Dong, Vice-President of the Shanghai Foreign Investment Development Board. He too gave a presentation about his organisation and the economy of Shanghai.

In the morning, the topic of biotechnology played a dominant role in the forum. Pascal Brenneisen, former Regional President of Novartis, and Dr. Laurenz Kellenberger, Scientific Director of Basilea Pharmaceutica, represented the Basel pharmaceutical industry with presentations on their activities in China. Dr. Ralf Schlaepfer, Deloitte, talked about the exponential impact of technological innovation, including in relation to China. A highlight of the morning was the appearance of a Chinese Life Sciences consultant, as well as three representatives of Chinese biotech companies and investors who shared their experiences with the audience in a panel discussion.

A special workshop for biotech companies was held that same afternoon in a separate room. Here Swiss companies (mostly start-ups) enjoyed an intensive exchange with the Chinese guests about possibilities for cooperation. At the same time, interesting presentations were being given in the afternoon in the main hall about the new Shanghai free trade zone, banking in China, personnel management and marketing. Among the speakers were the former regional director of the China Commerzbank, Felix Aepli, the former CEO of Geberit, Asia-Pacific and Hans Jakob Roth, the former Consul General of Switzerland in Shanghai. Professor Prandini of the Zürcher Hochschule Winterthur spoke about the investment situation of Chinese companies in Switzerland. Josef Müller, retired and long-time Head of Nestlé in the Greater China Region, also gave a speech as a final highlight to the day. He enriched the panel discussion greatly with his vast experience and incisive statements.

A reception in the Bar Rouge on the 30th floor of the Messeturm rounded off the day; this was hosted by the Department of External Relations and Marketing.

The Basel-Shanghai Business Forum was organised by the China Business Platform (Office for Economy and Labour of Basel-Stadt and the Service de l ' Economie of the Canton of Jura) in cooperation with the Department of External Relations and Marketing of Basel-Stadt, with Deloitte, as well as other partners.
