Results from company survey focusing on the finance industry

The Economic Development Unit of the Canton of Basel-Stadt carried out an attractiveness survey of Basel as an investment location during November and December 2015. Interviews were conducted with 105 companies from the financial sector, banking industry, insurance companies and other financial service providers.

According to the survey, leisure and culture are among the Canton of Basel-Stadt’s strengths. Companies from the financial sector are satisfied with the availability of office premises. However, from the companies’ point of view, there is an urgent need for action regarding the tax burden of individuals. The respondents assessed the tax burden of legal persons, the level of charges and the availability of skilled labour slightly more positively (cf. Figure 1).

Regarding current challenges facing the companies, the latter see themselves as being basically confronted by all the subjects mentioned in the survey. Process optimisation due to rising statutory regulations, increasing demands for competence made on employees and digitalisation are among the greatest challenges these companies are up against. The survey response rate was 50%.

The company survey is part of the proactive support provided for companies, in addition to regular company visits. The aim is to get as much feedback as possible on the conditions in the Canton, because they represent an important basis for the targeted impetus required to optimise the quality of the location.

More surveys will be carried out at regular intervals and include companies from other industries.
